Melanotan II is a synthetic analogue of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that activates melanocortin receptors MC1R through MC5R with broad receptor affinity. Research applications include melanogenesis (photoprotective tanning) via MC1R, sexual arousal and erectile function via MC4R, appetite suppression, and fat metabolism. It is the parent compound from which the more selective PT-141 (Bremelanotide) was derived. Unlike PT-141, Melanotan II retains full melanocortin receptor breadth.
